[Literature] Irving, Washington. Autograph Manuscript



No place, ca. 1828. One sheet, approximately 8 7/8 x 6 5/8 in. (225 x 168 mm). One-page autograph manuscript by Washington Irving, composed of 27 lines on two conjoined sheets, from a draft from his A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus. Trimmed along top edge, with some text excised; small closed tear in bottom left. In mat with an engraved portrait of Irving and unexamined out of frame, 16 1/4 x 20 5/8 in. (413 x 524 mm).

Written in 1828, A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus is a fictional account of the life of the famed explorer. The text from this manuscript is found on pp. 455-456 of the first volume of the first edition (London, 1828).
